Bronx Now 2020 explores the burgeoning community of Bronx-based artists creating significant work in the borough today. Presenting a sample of Bronx talent, Bronx Now 2020 provides a baseline for the new decade in Bronx Art with a range of disciplines and unique points of view. The exhibition is organized by the curatorial team of Laura James and Eileen Walsh, who work under the name BXNYCreative.

The work in this survey represents an artistic community grappling  with the weight of an uncertain future, dystopian ideology, climate change, political unrest, economic insecurity, and our racialized culture. What stands out as uniquely Bronx is the fierce connection to place, and the ability to revel in the beauty and energy that it holds. On the precipice of the Bronx’s shifting demographics, Bronx Now 2020 creates a bridge between the community and the artist.

The exhibit is brought to you by BXNYCreative. For the past six years, it has been a mission of Laura James and Eileen Walsh to bring the riches of the art being made by Bronx-based artists to the widest audience possible. Since 2014 they have produced over 20 Bronx-based art shows, events, and professional development workshops together, and also presented independent projects. At the forefront of the BXNYCreative brand is the Bronx Now Biennial exhibition, and 2020 marks the third presentation. The show was curated using the BX200.COM Bronx Visual Artist Directory, an online database that is the brainchild of artist Laura James.

Bronx-based artists need to be seen by wider audiences. Our art, its voice and progression needs to be integrated into the larger story of New York City and American art. Bronx Now 2020 and its Manhattan location provides the perfect opportunity to reach a worldwide audience. The exhibit is presented in a 3,000 sq ft space donated by Chashama, a 501(c)3 that supports artists by partnering with property owners to transform unused real estate into space to present and create, and provides free art classes to under-resourced communities. This project is also supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and ArtID.
