DreamYard will be hosting a three-day intensive Maker Institute for makers and design educators on April 25-27. We are seeking applicants who identify as active makers/designers, and have an interest in teaching and social justice. If you are a Bronx-based maker, great! If you are interested in teaching in the Bronx, great!
Participation in the institute is free and an application is required. Accepted participants must commit to the entire institute which runs from Monday, April 25th through Wednesday, April 27th, 10am-4pm. Lunch will be provided each day, as well as all materials and resources.
Goals of the Institute:
• Maker @ DY : Participants will learn about DreamYard’s unique approach to maker education, which integrates social justice and art into a wide range of making and design practices (think: game design, fashion, wearables, physical computing!)
• Hands-On Learning : Each participant will develop a hands-on, creative lesson/project rooted in social justice and his/her own maker practice.
• Maker Jam : On the final day of the institute, we will host young people and other community members to participate in a Maker Jam event. The Jam will be a chance for guests to experience the projects developed by the participants and for participants to experience the results of their lesson planning in real time.
• Community Building : The institute will also be a chance to learn how to build a positive and supportive community in the classroom and a chance to network with maker and design peers.
The Institute will take place at the DreamYard Art Center – 1085 Washington Avenue, Bronx, NY 10456. We are accessible via MTA bus from the B/D trains (167th St) and the 2/5 trains (3rd Ave-149th St). The Art Center is wheelchair accessible, and we welcome folks of any national or ethnic origin, documentation status, gender, or sexual orientation.
