#PeaceInTheStreets Mural Project @ Briggs and 202nd Street, Bronx

The Bedford Mosholu Community Association is happy to announce the unveiling of a new community mural at the corner of 202nd Street and Briggs Ave.

With a Neighborhood Grant from Citizen’s Committee for New York in hand and a property owner willing to donate walls to a good cause, newly elected board member Samelys Lopez reached out to BX200 Bronx Visual Artist Directory’s Executive Director Laura James to identify Bronx based artists who could engage the children at P.S. 8 and brighten the neighborhood with a colorful ‘peace themed’ mural. Ms. James called on founder of the Graffiti Art Coalition and museum educator Lady K Fever to curate the walls, using artists with portfolios on the Directory, including world renowned graffiti and street artists Tkid, King Bee, CES, and Andre Trenier. The walls feature pieces from 11 artists in all – Fever, Laura James, Trike, Lizzy Alejandro, Ivan Gaete, HEVU 2EVU, Aida Garcia and Lilu Kaufman, both age 10.

The community has been very supportive of the project, bringing the artists water, lunch and exclamations of heartfelt thanks. A few neighborhood kids also helped out painting. Of the project President of the Bedford Mosholu Community Assn. Barbara Stronczer says, “The mural will brighten-up the area and be enjoyed by all ages in our community. We are very grateful to the artists for all the time and work they put into this project.”

“This mural has been a wonderful team effort that not only celebrates the beauty of our neighborhood, but the unity that characterizes us. One of the best parts for me was getting the local students at Public School 8 involved in the creation of the mural, watching local residents get excited about the wall as it was being painted, and collaborating with BX200 and Lady K Fever. A big thanks goes to the Citizen’s Committee of New York for providing the funding that made our vision possible and especially the hard work of the artists, which are all from the local community, into the making of the wall.” – Samelys Lopez, Bedford Mosholu Community Association.

The entire Bronx community is invited to come out and view the walls on the corner of 202nd St and Briggs Ave.
