Everyday Bronx is our opportunity to highlight the beauty of the everyday in the Bronx. We recently hit 6,000 followers and hope to reach our goal of 10,000 followers by the end of the year.

A revolutionary shift of thought on how the Bronx is seen has hit social media. That change came seven months ago when Edwin Torres and I took over the Everyday Bronx feed on Instagram. Our purpose is to tell a more complex story of the people who live and thrive here. Originally created as an exercise for the student’s of the Bronx Documentary Center’s after school photography class, the feed has now evolved to feature not just professional and amateur photographers but also community organizations and members.

Everyday Bronx is one of thirteen official Everyday feeds, and as opposed to the others that represent either a continent or country, our feed represents a borough. We are geographically the smallest feed, but the Bronx has been an huge contributor to American music, style and culture; it’s influence has been felt world wide and cannot be denied. Unfortunately, the mass media’s representation of the Bronx has been limited to a borough consumed by danger and violence, a place better left forgotten.

This is why the Everyday Bronx team feels this feed is so important. We believe that people from the Bronx should tell their own story, and share how they live everyday. By photographing our daily lives, we are able to not just document our collective history but also transform negative stereotypes that continue of plague our borough. With each photograph we celebrate the everyday beauty and drama of the Bronx and also provide others with a new lens and perspective of our borough.

Besides documenting daily life in the Bronx, Edwin and I also introduced new ways of promoting the Everyday feed, like #shoutoutthursdays where we feature other official Everyday feeds. We also have #throwbackthrusday where we share vintage photography of the Bronx. On #followfriday we share photos hash-tagged everydaybronx (#everydaybronx) by our followers. This has become so popular with our followers that other Everyday feeds have also begun to do #followfriday. This summer we’re planning special surprises for our followers and look forward to documenting many of the dynamic activities that will be taking place in our borough.
