Christy Speakman was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and has based her practice in NYC since 2005, living in The Bronx since 2007. Working primarily in photography, digital media and emerging technologies, her work explores the interconnectedness and impermanence found at the boundaries of nature and urban life. Recent projects have been exhibited nationally and internationally and in a wide range of contexts, including Cuchifritos, The Bronx River Art Center, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Chashama, the James Hotel, Art in Odd Places and Prospect 1.5 in New Orleans, as well as internationally at Webster University in the Netherlands and Art in Lobby in Argentina. Speakman has participated in artist residencies at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Santa Fe Art Institute, Oregon College of Art, and A Studio in the Woods, and participated in Artist in Marketplace #29 and NYFA’s Artist as Entrepreneur Bootcamp. She has received grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and a BRIO award from The Bronx Council of the Arts. Speakman received a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of New Orleans in 2002 and an M.F.A. in Photography from Ohio University in 2005.
