Artist Josie Gonzalez’ hands-on experience with community art making began as a young artist, when she interned with Cityarts Mural Workshop and apprenticed with painter Jorge Soto Sanchez at Taller Boricua/the Puerto Rican Art Workshop in East Harlem, New York. After completing her B.A. in Fine Arts at Queens College, she worked as a muralist with NYC’s Murals in the Parks program.
Her studio and public artworks have been exhibited or installed at numerous venues throughout the NYC area, including exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a permanent stained glass installation at the MTA Woodlawn Ave. #4 train station, an Astin Jacobo commemorative mural for Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation at the Jacob’s Place building in the Bronx, and most recently the “Rise Up” and “Rise Up 2” step murals in the South Bronx in 2017. In 2015 she was included in the Bronx Artist Documentary Project (BxADP) exhibit and book project, a historic photography project documenting Bronx artists at work in their studios.
Ms. Gonzalez’ past and present experience also includes serving as an educator and/or administrator for museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New-York Historical Society, El Museo del Barrio, and the Bronx Children’s Museum, and for community organizations, schools and hospitals throughout New York and the tri-state area.
